I am an intrepid traveller. Travelling has been my passion since school days. Hailing from the steel city of Rourkela in Odisha, I always had an opportunity to plan out my holidays with my family to exotic destinations that are rich in history and heritage in India. Looking back, I have also taken up trekking in Chauragarh hills of Pachmarhi, Shatrunjaya Hills of Palitana, Vaishno Devi or the Muktinath temple in Mustang Valley in Nepal and Lalang Waterfall in rainforests of Tioman Island in Malaysia. I have penned down the Odisha destinations in Pick2Move-India Travel planner brought out by Sampan Media Limited, New Delhi. I have compiled a travelogue themed- “Journeys across India” published by Best Books, Kolkata. I generally take up travel to pen down travelogues, know the art and craft of the faraway lands and of course, I do travel reporting for leading English dailies of India.

Khandwa: the city of legendary Bollywood singer

Khandwa- the city of legendary Bollywood singer

The ancient city lying in the Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh that was visited by the great personalities of India right from Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi and Lokmanya Tilak during their India visit is undoubtedly Khandwa. It is around 114 km from Indore and is the administrative headquarters of former East Nimar district. The city has not been explored by tourists but has a plethora of tourism potential. In this day and age, Khandwa is best known as the birthplace of Bollywood musical doyen, Kishore Kumar and holds a special place for music lovers. Besides, the city happens to be the birthplace of noted Hindi poet, Makhanlal Chaturvedi.

My premier visit to the city was back in late ‘90s after Navratri. I happened to come across Ghanta Ghar or the Clock Tower located on Mumbai-Delhi Central Railway in the vicinity of Ghaspura that forms a prominent landmark of the city.

There is the ruined Ganguly House on Bombay Bazaar that is the birthplace of the famed Ganguly brothers of Khandwa - the evergreen Bollywod actor Ashok Kumar, his younger brothers Anoop Kumar and the musical genius, Kishore Kumar.

For music lovers, there is Kishore Kumar Samadhi at Sanjay Nagar in the city where the last rites of the legendary singer were performed. In order to preserve the memories of the singer, the samadhi has been done up displaying the musical instruments like harmonium and tanpura.

Not many are aware that Khandwa is a significant destination for pilgrim tourism. I had a chance to drop in at the sprawling Dadaji Dhooniwale Samadhi, around 3 km from the railway station on the south-western part of the city. The samadhi has been built in memory of renowned Hindu saints- Swami Keshavanandji Maharaj and Swami Hariharanandaji Maharaj locally popular as Bade Dada and Chhote Dada. Quite near the Samadhi is the revered Bhawani Mata temple dedicated to Goddess Tulja Bhawani where thousands of devotees congregate during Navratri.

The city provides delectable cuisine and tourists can get to gorge on local favourites like doodh jalebi.
