travelmemoirsofswaati text

I am an intrepid traveller. Travelling has been my passion since school days. Hailing from the steel city of Rourkela in Odisha, I always had an opportunity to plan out my holidays with my family to exotic destinations that are rich in history and heritage in India. Looking back, I have also taken up trekking in Chauragarh hills of Pachmarhi, Shatrunjaya Hills of Palitana, Vaishno Devi or the Muktinath temple in Mustang Valley in Nepal and Lalang Waterfall in rainforests of Tioman Island in Malaysia. I have penned down the Odisha destinations in Pick2Move-India Travel planner brought out by Sampan Media Limited, New Delhi. I have compiled a travelogue themed- “Journeys across India” published by Best Books, Kolkata. I generally take up travel to pen down travelogues, know the art and craft of the faraway lands and of course, I do travel reporting for leading English dailies of India.

Delightful shopping in Pink City

Shopping for heritage wonders in Pink City

For years, travellers to Jaipur have been tempted with the astounding array of traditional handmade fabrics that the Pink City has on offer. There are a number of shopping destinations in the Pink City like Gandhi Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar in the old quarters of the city. For aspiring buyers intending to take their pick from the wide spectrum of traditional and exotic craft works of Jaipur, drop in at Rajasthali Textiles and Handicraft Emporium on M I Road in the heart of the city. If you want your travel memories to remain with you, then indulge in the world of  shopping for traditional fabric prints in Jaipur.
There are Bagru hand printed saris, salwar suits and bed sheets that are very affordable and come in a riot of colours and patterns. These saris are quite appealing and are brilliant pieces crafted relentlessly by the Chippa community of Bagru town around 40 km from the Pink city.  Bagru printed silk saris appear to be a stealing march over other fabrics and start from Rs 350 and can go up to Rs 1 lakh.

Tourists can select the fascinating Sanganeri saris that were once patronized by the royal family of Jaipur back in the 18th century. Crafted by the residents of Sanganer around 20 km from Jaipur, Sanganeri saris usually come in white or pastel background and have small floral designs. There may be folk designs but the most distinguishing feature of these saris is the absence of animal motifs.  One can go for tussar silk saris with Sanganeri printed works that are priced at Rs 1,200. Both Bagru and Sanganeri saris and salwar suits make a powerful fashion statement in today’s globalized world.

Lastly, do not forget to have a glimpse of Kota Doria saris that are not-so-heavy, transparent and have handmade weaves. These saris are made by the craftsmen of Ladnun town in Nagaur district of Rajasthan, lying around 225 km north-west of Jaipur and are priced between Rs 450 to Rs 5,000.
