Shopping delights in Gangtok

It’s impossible not to think about cloud-kissed mountains when one is dashing to Gangtok. But for travellers who would like to go on a shopping binge in the Himalayan town, there’s lot to explore.

 During my three day sojourn in Gangtok sometime in October, 2015, I used to begin my day by having a glimpse of glistening snow-laden Kanchenjunga at the break of the dawn. All round the day, one can get to feel the cool breeze blowing from the icy grip of the Himalayas.  The hub of the hill resort - Mahatma Gandhi Road is a significant landmark for reasons more than one. It forms a favourite hangout for not only tourists but travel trade, business community and the younger generation. One can get to have picturesque views of the hill resort resting in the lap of the Himalayas. And tourists do get to watch the ethnic community of the hill resort like the Rai community or the Limboos or the Lepchas clad in their colourful attire. While strolling down the well-laid walkways on Mahatma Gandhi Road, I was reminded of similar meeting ground in Shimla- Scandal point.

 In fact, most of the shopping malls, departmental stores and glitzy outlets are snuggled  on the Mahatma Gandhi Road that forms the upmarket area of the city and is buzzing with activities. For hill folks, life begins in the early hours of dawn and shopping centres and restaurants down their shutters as soon as the clock ticks nine. One is spoilt for choice walking around Mahatma Gandhi Road. If you are on a budget tour, then visit New Market or Kanchenjunga Shopping Mall tucked away on Mahatma Gandhi Road for shopping winter garments at a throwaway price. Most shopping malls, plush stores and shops offer an array of discounts to shoppers on festive season. There are a slew of western wears lined up in shops at New Market where shoppers can strike a good bargain.

 If you want to shop for beaded jewellery works, then Gangtok is the destination where beaded jewellery items  are unbelievably low-priced and are in-demand among hill folks.  Believe it or not, you get beaded jewellery works that come for a flat Rs 100. Besides, there are good luck charms like wind chimes, bells and dragons.   

Finally, just round off your shopping visit by dropping in at any food outlets and indulge in  the Tibetan delights on offer like hot momos, thukpas and the traditional Indian dishes.
