Blend of religion and art
The city of forts, lakes and dargah nestling in the Aravalli Ranges in Rajasthan can be none other than Ajmer where pilgrimage and tourism define its global appeal. It was post Navratri in 2016 that I was on a tourist trail to Ajmer to pay a second visit to the highly revered Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti, the famed Sufi Saint who migrated to India from Persia in 1192 along with the entourage of Mohammad Ghori. The city has been the creation of the valiant Rajput hero, Prithvi Raj Chauhan dating back to 7th century.
In the jet age, Ajmer is a bustling city dotted with Islamic architecture and scores of shops selling Rajasthani handicrafts and sweet delights of Sindh and Rajasthan that come at a pocket-friendly price. The highpoint in the city’s pilgrimage calendar is the Dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti tucked towards the southern rend of Ana Sagar Lake. The shrine is in the form of a dome on the foothills of Taragarh Hill and was laid down by Iltutmish and completed by Mughal Emperor Humayaun. The shrine has the tomb of the Sufi saint and has tens of thousands of pilgrims from the Indian sub-continent all round the year. It was my long-cherished wish to pay floral tributes to the venerated saint. We had assembled at Abdul Hamid Sahab ka Dalan to collect the flowers and from there on we proceeded to the tomb. One can come across a number of white marble buildings that are arranged around two courtyards and there are a large number of devotees in the wee hours of dawn to visit the Dargah to fulfill their wishes. The Dargah draws a steady footfall of pilgrims. Once the visit is over, a sense of bliss prevails in the mind.
