An array of thematic airport  gardens

For transit flyers making a convenient stopover at Changi International Airport, Singapore, there are a plethora of attractions to behold. Long-haul flyers can keep themselves occupied with the attractions. Ranked as the best airport in the world, the buzzword is the high level of comfort factors offered to flyers. During my brief sojourn at Changi International Airport as a flying visitor last year, I came across some magnificent, themed gardens.

Flyers can take the garden trail or visit innumerable cafes churning out delights or surf the Internet. The best way to spruce up one’s long journey is to take a look at Orchid Garden at Terminal 2 transit area with innumerable colourful orchids in bloom.

The most alluring of all gardens is the highly embellished Enchanted Garden that is quite lively and is better known as “Green Oasis”.  The main USP of the garden is the huge glass bouquet sculptures that are done up with colourful flowers and ferns. These glass bouquets are adorned with hand-cut stained glass tiles that glitter around the glass sculptures. The Enchanted Garden presents a picture of lush greenery and also has a small pond where one can gape at the Koi fish. As one walks around the garden there are sparkling lights illuminating the garden on the trail.

I also strolled around the rooftop Sunflower Garden that rests in a tranquil area and sitting in the garden, one can view the parking bay and the runway area of the airport.

Lothal

Unlocking exciting Harappan destination

For those who are mad about Indian history and would like to hark back into the hoary past of Indus Valley civilization, then get ready to visit Lothal, one of the best known port city of Harrappan culture. Nestling about 100 km away from Ahmedabad, Lothal dates back to the period of 2400 BC. During my whirlwind trip to Saurashtra sometime last decade, Lothal was my ultimate stopover after touring the coastal areas of Saurashtra.

Lothal in local dialect implies the mound of the dead and visiting the Harappan town was like going back to my school days. The ancient port city was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India sometime between 1955 to 1960. What was once a bustling trade hub in the hoary past now has the archaeological remains of warehouse, dockyard, town and the citadel. A visit to Lothal would not disappoint the history buffs and would be well worth the effort.

Kuala Lumpur's Galleria Seri Perdana

A Malay destination for art buffs

For first-time travellers flying down to Kuala Lumpur and with a yen for art, here’s something far more interesting to know about. There’s Galleria Seri Perdana on Jalan Damansara, an exotic museum located on the hilltop. Galleria Seri Perdana has been the one-time residence of the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohammad. The museum is an imposing landmark in Kuala Lumpur and is replete with furniture and decor belonging to ‘80s era.

The sprawling museum provides good views of the city and has a garden. The museum has an exhibition space for showcasing the mementoes gifted to the Prme Minister.  Besides other art curios, there is a carpentry workshop displaying wooden craft items.

There are some destinations in Taiwan that have a magical hold on tourists and there’s no place better than Sun Moon Lake at Yuchi township in Nantou County. Renowned as the largest fresh water lake in Taiwan, the Sun Moon Lake is definitely the most-favoured destination for tourists setting out on a Taiwanese sojourn. For those wannabe travellers gearing up to have a glimpse of the Sun Moon Lake, the preferred choice of the hospitality group is Hotel Del Lago, the four-star property at Yuchi township.

Taichung's Miyahara

Unmissable dessert experience at Miyahara 

Forthose with a sweet tooth embarking upon a trip to Taiwan, a visit to Miyahara- the plush dessert outlet in Taichung is a must-visit destination. Nestling on the busy thoroughfare of Zongshan Road in Central district of Taichung, the upmarket outlet opened sometime in 2012 and it’s definitely not a hangout zone for the hip and the happening crowd. It is hugely popular for exotic Taiwanese sweet delights.

Being the second largest city in Taiwan, visitors usually go to Taichung and once you’re in the city, Miyahara should not be given a miss. The elegant dessert outlet has an entire array of mouth-watering chocolate and pine apple pastries, cakes, ice creams, cookies and sweet delights made out of sesame. I tried the sesame delight. It’s a bit bitter but definitely a new gourmet experience. Another speciality is the sun cake with fruit and tea flavours. There are 17 different kinds of chocolate ice creams that would boggle the imagination of food connoisseurs. The USP of the glitzy outlet is that every sweet delights are well-placed on racks and come in attractive packaging. For those looking forward to take back home, the sweet delights of the outlet serve as great gift pieces.

Pride of Taiwanese hospitality

For high-end luxury travellers wending their way to Kaohsiung, the luxury destination is 85 Sky Tower Hotel. The five-star property serves as a home for travellers visiting Kaohsiung.  I had an unhurried experience of halting in the hotel on my visit to Kaohsiung.

Rated as the largest hotel in Kaohsiung and Taiwan as well, 85 Sky Tower Hotel stands tall in Kaohsiung with 85-storied building and provides breathtaking views of the Straits of Taiwan, the harbour and the city. Staying in the hotel, I had an opportunity to rediscover Kaohsiung. The high rise boasts of posh dining facilities with eight restaurants serving Taiwanese delights and Continental menu. There’s indoor pool and luxurious rooms that provide wonderful glimpses of the sea. The splendid hotel also has a golf course.
