Around four years ago, when I had headed to Penang, I was in luck to have an experience of a luxury stay at a five-star beach resort popularly known as Shangrila’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa. Nestling on Batu Ferringhi Beach on Jalan Batu Ferringhi, Rasa Sayang in Bahasa connotes the feelings of love. After landing at Penang International Airport from Kuala Lumpur, I headed to Batu Ferringhi Island. I was completely awestruck by the sheer magnitude of the well-known resort and the kind of luxury accommodation that was on offer.

The picture-postcard Batu Ferringhi Island in Penang is only 45 km drive from Penang International Airport. The picture of white sand and blue azure waters of the sea meeting the eye from the spacious hotel room will make the travellers sink into the world of luxury that remains etched in the mind forever.

I halted for a couple of days in the beach resort that provides some unforgettable views of the beach on the Straits of Malacca. The hotel rests in a secluded paradise surrounded by a canopy of trees and one can enjoy fascinating views of the sea from the room.

Well-equipped with more than 150 rooms, Rasa Sayang serves a fusion of contemporary and authentic  Malaysian art and its swanky fine-dining restaurant serves a whip of Malaysian delicacies and not to mention the South Indian delights served on request.  

Another advantage of halting in the hotel is shopping at Batu Ferringhi night market that is at a stone throw distance from the hotel.

Berjaya Hotels and Resorts: A cut above the rest

A trip to Pulao Tioman in Pahang state of Malaysia gets more convenient for those opting to stay at the five-star property- Berjaya Hotels and Resorts in the island.  Pulao Tioman or Tioman Island is around 50 miles from Mersing jetty on South China Sea. One can also fly down from Kuala Lumpur to Pulao Tioman that has an airstrip at Tekek hamlet. I recall my first visit to Malaysia in 2010 when I headed to Tioman Island after a two-hour long cruise on South China Sea.

Once I reached the island, I made it to Berjaya Hotels and Resorts by island transportation bus. I halted at Berjaya Hotels and Resorts, a huge sprawling complex with many duplex apartments made of chalets. There are a lot of adventure activities for tourists at Berjaya Tioman like cruising glass-bottom boats and snorkelling at Renggis Island. Besides, tourists can also take up cycling and trekking around the island and play golf at Golf Spa and Resort. I took out time to laze around Berjaya Tioman Beach nearby.   The five-star haunt has Sri Nelayan Coffee House that serves an astounding array of tantalizing International and Malaysian cuisine.

Tioman is rated among the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world and is surrounded by lush greenery all around. It records heavy rainfall during  monsoon when the sea water gets choppy.

The Howard Plaza Hotel Taipei

 

A home away from home

It’s always a pleasure to surround yourself with all good things in life and while travelling to distant lands, we all look for luxury. A couple of years ago when I had made a dash of Taipei, I had a chance to halt at The Howard Plaza Hotel, the five-star luxury haunt that commands a strategic location. I headed straight from Taoyuan International Airport, around 40 minutes from Taipei City to The Howard Plaza Hotel.

For the well-heeled class, The Howard Plaza Hotel is the perfect luxury destination where you can let your hair down and party. For a first-time visitor like me, the hotel was a home away from home. Located on Renai Road, the luxury red brick haunt is only 3 km from Taipei 101 Observatory Tower and around 14 km from National Palace Museum.

Replete with luxury suites that have wooden furniture, Chinese antiques, all rooms are well illuminated and have free wi-fi facilities, tiny refrigerators coffee and tea makers and mini bars. The hotel has 8 restaurants and one can sample the treats including Continental delights and an astounding array of Asian platters including Chinese,Taiwanese and Japanese cuisine. One should not miss out on complimentary buffet breakfast in the restaurant.

For luxury tourists who would want to savour the delight of Thai cuisine in an eco-tourist destination in the vicinity of Bangkok, hold your breathe. There is Nakhon Pathom in Central Thailand around 35 km west of Bangkok.. During my first visit to Bangkok, I did not want to miss the experience of travelling in the countryside of Central Thailand around Bangkok and get first-hand info on rural Thai life in the midst of verdant greenery.

One fine morning, we had set out from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom. When we reached the destination, we headed to Rose Garden Riverside Hotel sprawling over 70 acres of land area on the banks of Ta Chine river. The four-star property is undoubtedly one of the best eco-tourist destinations around Bangkok with landscaped garden, golfing, entertainment and botanical park. One can get to view the rural Thai life on the river banks. Moreover, the century-old property is made of Thai teakwood and done up with 160 suites. The restaurant of the hotel is replete with great Thai food that we did not miss out. The hotel serves as a centre for Thai art and craft that serve as gift items..

Labuan Bajo in Flores Island

Mediterranean flavours of Labuan Bajo

Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province has a rich biodiversity of marine life and Labuan Bajo being the capital of West Manggarai Regency, tourism plays a significant role in transforming the lives of fisher folks into tourism agents. Diving and snorkelling are the main under water adventure activities for tourists.  During my visit to Labuan Bajo last summer, I had an option to drop in at Tree Top restaurant for dining.

Located at Soekarno in the hub of Labuan Bajo, Tree Top’s USP is to churn out delectable  Indonesian  sea food. Besides, there is Mediterranean food served in the restaurant including the vegeatrian sphagetti punta nasta  which is nothing but Mediterranean pasta. The seven-year-old food outlet overlooking Labuan Bajo harbour provides sound views of Flores Sea while dining.

The entrance of the food bistro flaunts the paintings of Lord Krishna depicting Javanese. The furniture pieces are crafted from iron wood procured from Kelimatu Island.

Spectacular views of Andaman Sea

Three years ago, I had cruised from Penang to Langkawi. It was a three-hour cruise that brought me to a fascinating tourist destination of Langkawi located on Andaman Sea in Malaysia. We landed at the jetty close to Kuah Town in the south-east of Langkawi. Popularly known as Pulao Langkawi, the beach resort  is sparsely populated   and is dotted with swaying palm trees, verdant greenery of rain forests, fresh sea breeze and long coastline that are the distinguishing features of the island resort. Moreover, Langkawi is an emerging honeymoon destination.

Langkawi has a number of luxury haunts and we were at Langkawi Laguna Resort, the five-star haunt. The first thing that meets the eye while landing at Langkawi jetty is the Eagle Square from where the island derives its name. It comprises a 12-metre high sculpture of an eagle in reddish brown colour looking into the sea. One can get good views of the Eagle Square overlooking the sea with the mountains and ferries serving the backdrop. It takes around 45 minutes to move from one corner to the other in the main island and the best option to tour the destination is to hire a cab. One can opt for a ferry ride to cruise other islands in and around Langkawi.

 Langkawi is a shopping destination for budget tourists and we missed no chance to take a peek at Cenang Mall in the heart of the main island.

Lebua Hotels and Resorts, Bangkok

The lifestyle destination of Bangkok would leave luxury-seekers wanting for more. Aptly known as “Venice of the East”, the Thai capital has plenty of attractions for tourists to make their trip enjoyable and truly memorable. The destination is replete with renowned shopping malls, luxury haunts and delightful Thai food. I have indelible memories of Bangkok during my premier visit to the city and would like to share some of the luxury experiences.

For high-end tourists, there’s no better place than Lebua Hotels and Resorts at Silom Road. The luxury, five-star haunt is a 64-storyed high-rise soaring around 200 metres high and is the pride of the city. Replete with plush Tower Club and the huge Dome that has an amazing array of fabulous restaurants, the hotel is a destination where luxury and comfort go together. Mezza Luna forms the signature creation of Lebua with innovative and new-age cuisine.

I was in luck to dine at Lebua’s landmark restaurant- Breeze resting on 51st and 52nd floors of the Tower Club. The glittering restaurant is done up in glitzy interiors and is reached by 25 metre neon lit sky bridge.

 Breeze serves contemporary Asian platter and the menu is divine. We were served chef’s tasting menu comprising wok fried spicy crispy mushroom with red pepper ginger,  hot and sour soup with bean curd wrapped vegetables,  Malaysian Brown rice, stir fried vegetable glutton with spicy sauce and cigar bun and green tea chocolate. It was a lifetime experience and the USP of Breeze is that it commands 360 º panoramic views of Bangkok, the Chao Phraya river and the BTS sky train.
